There is quite the female movement going on lately and thanks to social media (primarily Instagram) its circulating more and more. I'm taking about the GIRL BOSS movement. If you haven't heard about it, all you have to do is type in Girl Boss or Boss Babe on Instagram and a plethora of accounts and posts will come up showing women around the WORLD creating their brands, chasing their dreams, growing their businesses, etc. The list goes on and on. Taking charge of your life can be scary, especially when we have society throwing all these things in our faces that we "should be" doing: going to a 4 year college, buying a house, saving money, working a 9-5 job. Although all of those things are SUPER important and I am in NO way looking down on those things, there's a new wave of empowerment going on where people, especially women in their 20s are realizing the "normal" grind isn't for them. And I am one of them.
I was SO tired of working jobs that I hated just because I had to make money and learn the adult life. I hated waking up everyday to a strict schedule only to find myself not chasing the things I'm most passionate about: Modeling, Acting, Makeup, Writing. So, I quit my day job and started focusing on building my career myself, how I wanted to do it, MY way. But let me tell you, it has not been easy! Taking your career into your own hands takes a lot of work. If you want to be a successful girl boss, keep these 3 things at the top of your priority list to ensure you're making the most of this change of life.
TIME DEDICATION: If you're relying on yourself to book your own work, promote your small business, sell your handmade products, whatever you are doing, you need to set aside time, DAILY. Create your own work schedule and leave a chunk of untouchable time in each day to get stuff done. Whether that be creating new blog posts, checking/updating emails, creating coupons, submitting your headshots to new agents, whatever it is, you need to set aside the time to get your work done. Because if you don't, you won't get anything out of your career and ultimately won't have much success (and uh...where is the money going to come from?) So, put the phone on do not disturb mode for a couple hours, make your to do list, and get what you need to get done that day, done. (Don't worry, the retweets and status updates can wait)
INVESTMENT: It's true when they say you need to spend money to make money. I don't mean blow all of your life savings. But for example, I have a website, business cards, headshots and comp cards (for modeling and acting). Those things cost money yet, but they book me work. If I didn't have my headshots, I couldn't even go on auditions. If you're going to put yourself out there, you need to invest in the key things that will make people take you seriously. You wouldn't hire a painter to paint your house if he/she didn't own any paint brushes right? Same deal. Write a list of which things you absolutely need to promote whatever your brand is, budget it, and start investing in those things. (Plus, keep all your receipts and confirmation orders for tax write offs!)
VISION: What is your end goal? What are you trying to accomplish? Where do you want to be in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years? These are questions you need to ask yourself AND ANSWER before you just up and quit your job. Please know I did not quit my job one day out of random. I contemplated this whole girl boss thing for months. Many nights crying on the phone to my best friend not knowing what to do. I finally came up with a plan and made moves very carefully and made sure I had gigs and things set up for me for when I'd be done with my "day job." If you're not really sure what exactly it is you want to chase, take some time to figure it out. Don't leap until you know where you're going to land.
Taking my career and my life into my own hands has been one of the most scary, unpredictable, crazy things I've ever done. But you know what, I am the happiest I've ever been. And I'm pretty darn proud of myself. You CAN do it. Put on your big girl shoes (I know everyone says pants, but I like shoes more), and take that step. There's a girl boss in you just waiting to conquer!
